The September Project
The September Project began as Harry Spero's personal response to the events of September 11, 2001 and the profound impact they had on New York City, the nation, and everyday life. Within weeks of the attacks, Spero wrote many of the songs that would ultimately become September, a rock-pop concept album reflecting on loss, resilience, community, and renewal. Released by Razor + Tie Music in 2011 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11, the album examines both the world that existed before the attacks and the one that emerged afterward. Songs such as "Let Freedom Ring" and "Union Square" captured the emotions, observations, and hopes of a city and a country finding its way forward. A portion of the proceeds from the album benefited 9/11 Day and Tuesday's Children, organizations dedicated to supporting families and communities impacted by the tragedy.

Harry wrote five of the 10 songs on September, including the first single “Let Freedom Ring,” within one month of the attacks. “Let Freedom Ring,” says Spero, “describes our close knit community of family and friends, and our determination to get our lives back to the way they were before the Trade Center tragedy.” The album's planned second single, “Union Square,” along with several others “are first blush observations of the new world we were facing after 9/11.” The five songs Spero wrote immediately after the attacks are complemented by five other songs from his catalogue that together formed the concept album. The album closes with “This Life We Choose,” an acknowledgement, says Spero, “that 10 years after 9/11, many of us still have questions about who we are, and how we might achieve happiness through reinvention of our lives.” Proceeds from sales of September are donated to MyGoodDeed (911day.org) and Tuesday's Children (tuesdayschildren.org), two 9/11-related nonprofit organizations.
